Contact your employer immediately if you believe there’s a discrepancy in your report.

An increase to the one-time death benefit was approved by the Teachers’ Retirement Board, effective July 1, 2024. This was the third increase in the last five years and the first under a policy approved by the board in March 2024. You can name or update your one-time death benefit recipient at any time, and you can name one or more recipients—a person, trust, estate, charitable organization, corporation or public entity.

CalSTRS earned an 8.4% net return on investments for the 2023–24 fiscal year, ending with the total fund value at $341.4 billion as of June 30, 2024. The 2023–24 return keeps CalSTRS on track, as the 5-, 10-, 20- and 30-year returns all surpass the actuarial assumption of 7.0% during a period of inflation, rising interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty.

Our members indicated retirement planning, the cost of health care and the state of the economy as major drivers of confidence in their financial needs being met in retirement.

The CalSTRS Ombuds Report for 2023–24 summarizes the activities of the Office of the Ombuds during the last fiscal year and provides a snapshot of how the ombuds serves our members. The office received 461 cases during 2023–24. The top case types were issues related to the PBI Research Services data event, service retirement benefits, employer reporting, disability and refunds.
