Medicare

Medicare is a nationwide federally administered health insurance program for eligible individuals, usually age 65 and older. Medicare has three parts: Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital costs; Medicare Part B covers outpatient medical and physician costs; and Medicare Part D covers prescription drug costs.

Most people receive Medicare Part A premium free because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes while they were working. Everyone must pay the Medicare Part B premium. If you or your spouse did not pay the Medicare tax while you worked and you’re age 65 or older, you can request to purchase Medicare Part A or you may qualify for the CalSTRS Medicare Premium Payment Program.

To enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B, call Social Security at 800-772-1213 or visit your local Social Security office.

Eligibility

Participation in the CalSTRS Medicare Premium Payment Program (MPPP) is optional and based on your ability to qualify for the program. You must decide what is best for your own situation.

CalSTRS’ Medicare Premium Payment Program (MPPP) for Medicare Part A

The CalSTRS Medicare Premium Payment Program is funded in part by employer contributions. Under the MPPP, CalSTRS pays Medicare Part A hospital insurance premiums for eligible retired members. Premium costs vary and are not determined by CalSTRS.

CalSTRS’ Medicare Premium Deduction Service (MPDS) for Medicare Part B

The Medicare Premium Deduction Service is available to CalSTRS members currently enrolled in Medicare. The MPDS allows members to deduct their Medicare Part B premiums directly from their monthly benefit. This service is provided as a courtesy and there is no fee.

Medicare Part D

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services does not allow third party providers to pay Medicare Part D premiums, including CalSTRS.
