Changing districts? Remember to transfer your unused sick leave

If you change employers during your career, make sure to work with your previous employer right away to arrange the transfer of your accumulated unused sick leave to your new employer. We’ll convert your unused sick leave to additional service credit when you retire, but we can only accept unused sick leave from employers you worked for during the last school year in which you earned creditable compensation.

The transfer of sick leave from employer to employer is not regulated by CalSTRS, and some restrictions will apply.

An important note—if you cash out your accumulated sick leave, the compensation you receive is not creditable to CalSTRS and cannot be converted to additional service credit when you retire.

Learn more about sick leave, and how it’s calculated and reported, in the Member Handbook.

When you retire, we’ll convert your unused sick leave to service credit—more service credit means an increase to your lifetime monthly retirement benefit.
